Pet Matchmaker

Welcome to my corner — Patty’s corner! Just like The Blues Brothers once sang: “everybody … needs somebody … to love.”  That’s why I created the Kennelwood Pet Resorts Pet Matchmaker program – to help pair dogs and cats that need a good home with an appropriate, loving Pet Parent.

Whether you’re an experienced pet owner or you’re searching for your first puppy love, my free assistance can help you research, locate and choose the best pet for your lifestyle. I’ll connect prospective Pet Parents with rescue organizations and breeders, can provide facts on the temperament, size, and energy level of the pet you are interested in.

Just contact me at 314.446.1011 or

Ask the Expert

Our experts provide Pet Parents with real advice on anything about pets — from answers to questions about boarding facilities, to how to get rid of pesky fleas, or if your pet is being naughty, there are answers for that too.

TRAINER

From aggression to jumping on couches to basic obedience – some pets have a more difficult time than others adapting to the home life of their Pet Parents. Here are some frequently asked questions about training (and see more about our training services here):

What types of behavior problems can individual training solve?
Professional trainers work with a number of problem behaviors including; aggression, front door manners, jumping on counters, door dashing, not coming when called, basic obedience and management issues such as grooming, feeding, housebreaking, sleeping, and new puppy start up. Sometimes seeing the home environment and how the pet interacts with family members can greatly help with the evaluation process.

Can I still train my dog if I don’t have a lot of space at home?
You don’t need a lot of space for most training exercises. If you need more room for a particular command, you can take your dog outside.

When can I start training my new puppy?
You can start training as early as 9 weeks or as soon as your puppy has the second set of Distemper inoculations.

How do I know which dog training program works best for my pet and me?
The best way to determine which training program is best suited to your needs is to call the Kennelwood training department at 314-446-1025 and speak to a trained professional. You will be asked some questions and then directed to a trainer for more details. You and your trainer can then personalize your training program.

GROOMER

Working with area Pet Parents and their pets since 1974, here are some of the most frequently asked questions about grooming (and learn more about our grooming services here):

What is the difference between filing and trimming nails?
To file nails specialists use a rotary tool to smooth out the rough areas on your pets nails to make them snag-free and rounder. To trim nails we use professional nail trimmers and cut them just above the “quick.”

How do you brush teeth?
We use a small toothbrush with Nolvadent paste, which is designed especially for pets. Nolvadent loosens and reduces plaque buildup. The cost is $8.00.

What is a Healthy Skin & Coat Treatment?
Healthy Skin & Coat is a hydrating treatment applied to your pet after their bath, which will help lessen itchy, dry skin. This is great to use all year round. Your pet will feel silky and the appearance of your pet’s coat will be shiny and beautiful.

What is SHED-X® and how much does it cost?
SHED-X® Treatments remove excess hair and dander from your pet. The treatments will also reduce the hair being shed in your home and car. If you suffer from allergies, SHED-X® Treatments will ease symptoms by lessening hair and dander. We recommend SHED-X® Treatments every four to six weeks depending upon your pet’s coat and your personal tolerance for pet hair.

What is a shave down?
Your pet’s hair will be cut to about the length of the hair on top of their muzzle: very short. This style of groom can be useful for heavily matted dogs or pets with very thick coats during the summer.

How do you get rid of fleas?
First visit your veterinarian for a specific treatment for your pet. Then to rid the fleas from your home, you can purchase a flea bomb product. Bedding and carpets and anywhere your pet has been must also be treated at the same time. Then order our flea shampoo every week for three weeks to break the flea egg cycle when you get your pet groomed.

Will a SHED-X® Treatment hurt my pet?
SHED-X® will not hurt them at all. Most pets enjoy the extra brushing and attention during the process. If your pet does become uncomfortable, we will allow your pet to rest and begin later.

What do you do when a pet does not like to be groomed or have their nails trimmed?
Some pets are more sensitive than others and we take their feelings into consideration. Our stylists will work with your pet and a grooming partner to help ease your pet into the process. If your pet does have a tendency to bite, a humane muzzle will be used to protect our stylists as well as your pet.

Should I get my puppy groomed?
Absolutely! The earlier you introduce them to the grooming process, the more they will enjoy it. We suggest you bring them in every two weeks for a bath so we can begin a bond with them and become part of their family. Be sure your puppy has been properly vaccinated prior to grooming or boarding.

PET HEALTH

Just like our Pet Parents, dogs and cats periodically get sick. It happens. But here are some of the most frequently asked questions posed to several area veterinarians.

My pet’s nose is dry. Is he/she sick?
The “warm nose myth” is just that – a myth. A dog’s or cat’s nose can be very wet and cool one moment then be warmer and not-so-moist the next. When it changes throughout the course of a day is normal.

Can I give my dog or cat aspirin?
For dogs, if suffering from arthritis, aspirin can help but with caution and under a veterinarian’s supervision. Aspirin is in a class of drugs called NSAIDs – Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs – and dogs are particularly sensitive to the gastrointestinal effects of pain, bleeding, and ulceration that can be a side effect of these drugs. Coated aspirin may help with the gastrointestinal effects. Cats are much more sensitive to aspirin and there are other alternatives your vet can prescribe. Definitely do not use Tylenol or Ibruprofin (Advil or Motrin) with either cats or dogs.

What are the signs seen with antifreeze toxicity in dogs and cats?
The animal would seem as if it is intoxicated with alcohol, and this is an emergency situation, so see your veterinarian immediately.

My cat urinated on the rug. Should I be concerned?
Don’t fret. Felines are known for urinary marking behaviors. However, if it occurs in an unusual pattern, it may warrant medical attention.
