Always check over any pet that has been sprayed by a skunk prior to beginning the de-odorizing treatment. If the eyes are squinty, red, or the pet seems to have pain or discomfort in the eye area, he or she should be evaluated by a veterinarian prior to treatment. Skunk spray can be extremely irritating and even cause damage.
- Generously apply baby powder to the pet’s coat while it is dry. Pay close attention to the head and chest as this is a common area to receive the direct skunk spray. Rub the powder through the coat to the skin.
- Mix 1 ounce of Kennelwood Deodorizing Shampoo into a 32-ounce plastic bottle. Fill the bottle the rest of the way with water. Shake well.
- Apply the solution to lightly wet the coat.
- Massage mixture into the coat. Use a sponge to work shampoo well into the head area. Do not allow shampoo in the eyes (if you utilize the Hydro Surge bathing unit, DO NOT run the mixture through the unit). Oil from the skunk spray will remain in the unit
- Let shampoo set on pet 5 minutes. (Remember grooming safety rules and never walk away from a pet in the tub or on a grooming table.)
- Rinse out shampoo thoroughly.
- Mix one large bottle of hydrogen peroxide, one box baking soda, and two tablespoons of Dawn dish soap into bucket. While slowly stirring, add just enough water to make a slurry. Carefully sponge the slurry mixture over the head. DO NOT get in the eyes. Pour remaining mixture over the body. Massage the mixture deep into the coat.
- Let set for five minutes.
- Rinse out slurry mixture thoroughly.
- If using the Hydrosurge Bathing system: fill the tub with one ounce of Kennelwood Deodorizing Shampoo and add 2-3 sprays of Kennelwood Deodorizing Cologne Spray. Add water to the appropriate Hydrosurge fill lever. Let set for five minutes. If bathing by hand, combine the mixture in a bucket and gentle pour it over the pet’s head and body. Massage thoroughly into coat.
- Let set for 5 minutes.
- Rinse out shampoo thoroughly.
- Brush the pet’s teeth with Kennelwood Oral Care Gel. The pet may continue to have a skunk odor on his or her breath for several days. Be sure and inform the owner of this. Finally, also provide Kennelwood Fresh Breath Water Additive at the end for the pet to drink.
14. It can be difficult to eliminate the skunk odor from pet collars. It is recommended to replace the collar. You can attempt to remove the odor by soaking the collar in the hydrogen peroxide/baking soda mix and then washing in a washing machine.
