The Doberman was originally bred as a fierce guard dog in the town of Apolda in Germany in the early 1880s. According to a study carried out by canine psychologist Stanley Coren, Dobermans are the fifth smartest dog (this is after the Border Collie, Poodle, German Shepherd and Golden Retriever).
