Steps On What To Do If You Find a Pet
1. Think Safety First and Assess the Situation
The pet you have found may be stressed, frightened, or injured. This pet may or may not be safe to approach. Please be mindful of yourself, your children, or other pets when you're near a stray pet.
Remain calm and talk quietly. Use your best judgment, If the situation does not seem safe, call Animal Control or call your local police department.
2. Take Found Pet to Vet Office
Take the animal to a vet’s office that can scan the pet for a microchip. If the pet is microchipped, this may give you contact information of either the owner, or a rescue organization. If you have a crate to transport the pet that is the best.
3. Call or Visit Local Shelters To Report Found Dog
Ask your local shelters to see if anyone has called looking for the pet that you have found. Visit the shelter to see if anyone has put up a missing pet flyer of the pet that has gone missing.
4. Create Found Pet Flyer
FOUND PET FLYER TEMPLATE. Instructions for inserting picture into file: go to the top of the page and click on insert, go to picture, and insert picture from file. This will take you to your files where you pictures will be saved.
5. Report Found Pet to Kennelwood
Send your found pet flyer to pets@kennelwood.com. Kennelwood will post the found pet on kennelwood.com and also eblast clients within the listed zip code advising them of the found pet. All reports of found pets will be attended to during regular business hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.
6. Distribute Your Found Pet Flyers
To VET'S OFFICES (list of vet offices), GROOMING SHOPS, SHELTERS (list of shelters), LOCAL POST OFFICE, POLICE DEPARTMENT (list of police departments), FIRE DEPARTMENT
Fill out the given found pet flyer (item #3) and distribute flyers with your dog's information.
7. Walk the Found Pet
If the pet has leash manners and is not too stressed, take the dog for several walks. The owners of the pet may be riding around looking for it.
8. When People Begin Calling
Be sure to interview callers to make sure you are giving this pet back to the proper family. Screen callers and try to ask questions very specific to the found dog.
9. Become a Temporary Foster Parent
Keep the pet at your home and run an ad in a local paper advertising the found pet.
10. Surrender the Pet to a No-Kill Local Shelter or Rescue Organization
When doing this you will give the owner the opportunity to find their pet.
