(June 18, 2008) Dave van Garderen, Kennelwood’s Page/Lindbergh Personal Trainer and his dog Stewart, a Belgian Malinois, win the DVG Schutzhund I National Competition. The five day competition was held in Orlando, Florida by the DVG clubs of America (Deutscher Verband der Gebrauchshundsportvereine) the oldest and largest Schutzhund training organization in the world. The trial had a total of 46 participants from all over the country and Canada. Dave and Stewart competed against nine others within the Schutzhund I category and were awarded first place.
The competition is composed of the three Schutzhund disciplines: tracking, obedience, and protection. The tracking portion requires the dog to track footsteps over various terrains with complete accuracy and commitment to the track. The second test is obedience, exercising the dog’s ability to heel, sit, down, stay, retrieve, and more. The test is concluded with protection work which focuses on the relationship between the dog and handler. Each phase of the three disciplines: tracking, obedience, and protection is worth 100 points. Dave and Stewart received 97 points in tracking, 91 in obedience and 92 points in protection for a combined score of 280. Dave and Stewart finished first by 11 points higher than the 2nd place finisher.
Dave and Stewart return to St. Louis with yet another title to add to Stewarts list of Canine Good Citizen (CGC), Therapy Dog International (TDI), Companion Dog (CD), and Companion Dog Excellent, and his recent Schutzhund I (first place in Nationals). Dave continues to work his dog each day and works diligently on obedience training for Kennelwood clients at our Page/Lindbergh location. He aspires to get his Schutzhund II & III titles in the fall and hopes to qualify for the championships in Germany in September.
